The best part of the series is the on-going mystery of who killed Cassie Cavanaugh. This latest installment focuses on the story of the third Cavanaugh brother, Cole, and Grace Hunter. Cole is the most haunted by the death of his twin. He tries to assuage his guilt for not being there to protect Cass by becoming a Ultimate Fighter. It has given him a purpose. Cole gets an unexpected ally in the search for his sister’s killer by way of Dr. Grace Hunter. She is the local vet, but more importantly she is the daughter of the former Sheriff who originally investigated the murder. He knows something, but is in not mental state to share. Grace is petrified that the investigation will taint her father’s name. In previous books, she has been reluctant to help the brothers, but is now willing to partner with them if only to discover her father’s role in the whole affair. Now as the investigation heats up, we get some new revelations and some serious twists and turns in the story.

Of the three books, I liked the relationship aspect of this book the best. All three brothers have been broken and tortured by the memory of what happened to their younger sister and they have each been partnered with strong, accomplished women – the fierce forewoman, Mac; the savvy business woman, Sheridan; and now veterinarian, Grace. But for me, this relationship has the most chemistry of all three. It’s more of a slow build based on small interactions and minor choices that nurtures the relationship. It helps having him live on her property, but that is the starting point to turn around the awkwardness left behind from former confrontations in the previous books. He’s a big, bad UFC champion who is used to intimidating, but allows her to see his vulnerabilities. She is sweet to his spice. I enjoyed the evolution of this relationship very much.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Brash is a fantastic addition. I would consider it the best of the series yet.

I really liked this installment for the Cavanaugh brothers! Cole is definitely more complex then one would expect on the surface. His reason for living in a hotel says a lot about his inner character and how losing Cass really impacted him. I loved the change from using Grace to get what he wanted, to just wanting Grace. There were times when I just wanted to smack Grace, but then she was in an impossible position. You can see her accepting that perhaps the daddy she loved as a child wasn't as real as she wanted him to be. Its a hard thing, as an adult to understand the imperfections of your parents. And then there was Belle, of course. So, the true measure of anyone can be summed up by how animals react to them. Both James and Cole that in common, and you can trust Belle, who is she going to impress?

The underlying story of Cass is starting to heat up and I know I can't wait to get the final installment, to see what Blue does and where the cliffhangers from this story ends up!
One family destroyed by a death that happened over a decade ago. Anger, resentment and fear have ruled their lives ever since. Unable to forgive the man who let them go and refusing to loose each other these three brothers keep getting betrayed by the family that was supposed to love them. Discovering that there is another brother, a man they respect just adds to the struggle of simply living.

Laura Wright tells a rich, sensual poignant story in Brash, book three of her Cavanaugh Brothers Series. Deacon (Branded) was the oldest and the protector and took his sister's death hard. James (Broken) was the sensitive one. He tried to keep the family going after her death but he struggled and fell. But Cole? Cole was her twin, the other half of his soul died that day. It destroyed him and this is his story.

Grace Hunter, town vet, good girl, daughter of the former sherrif.. should be she had it all. But what she has is a father who is loosing his mind and a link to the death of one of the town's sweethearts. Grace knows her father is a good man even if he is often lost to dementia. Since she is sure of his integrity she is fighting those Cavanaughs how dare they consistently accuse her father of something. Righteous anger runs her until one day, one conversation and a piece of the past slips through. Could her father be involved? Grace at least is curious enough to go to the Cavanaughs with her information...

Cole Cavanaugh has been fighting to save his sister since she died. Guilt ridden for letting her leave his sight, all he can do is the the anger reign as he fights. Consequently he is a UFC champion. For years this has been enough but now his brothers have found some peace in life and some clues in death.. Cole wants what they have but has no way of figuring out how to find it. At least until sexy Grace Hunter turns to him with her information.

What makes this book so special? It's hard to define but I would have to say the connections. The redemption and the trip back home. Cole hasn't had a home since Cass died. In all honesty one of the most poignant remarks in the book was when he said Cass was home. She was gone.. so he no longer had a home. It was heartbreaking. This man, this strong man.. was just a broken little boy.

Laura Wright tells this story so beautifully you can't help but fall in love. Grace having to deal with watching her father fade before her eyes, a daughter's pain. But the race against time is wonderfully juxtaposed against human failings.

And it's not all about family.. both Grace and Cole have to fight their own demons. Discover just who they are and decide if they are going to fight for each other or walk away.

As I said this is book three, it can be read as a stand alone but I wouldn't recommend it.. These Cavanaugh Brothers are wonderful.. and there's one left! Can't wait to read Blue's story.
